Buying a home

If I buy a property in Portugal, can I live there?

Answer updated 18 October 2026Independent guide
Short answer

You can live in your own property, but owning it does not automatically give you the right to reside in Portugal. To stay long-term you need a residence visa or permit (e.g. D7, D8, work or family route). Short stays are fine under normal tourist rules. Check your specific situation with the Portuguese consulate or AIMA before planning a permanent move.
