Weather changes fast ("four seasons in one day"). Summer is the safest period for beaches and the sea; spring and autumn offer better prices and mild weather. Bring a light, waterproof jacket in any season.
Getting there
Ponta Delgada airport (PDL) receives flights from Lisbon, Porto and other European cities, plus direct links with North America at some times of year. Between islands there are short flights and, in season, ferries. Check routes and schedules with the carriers: they change.
Useful tips
- Rent a car: it is the most practical way to explore São Miguel.
- Check the forecast and viewpoint webcams before heading up.
- Respect trails, wildlife and whale-watching rules.
- Book early in summer.
North coast of São Miguel
Ribeira Grande is a great base for the more authentic side of the island: the Mulher do Capote liqueur factory, Monte Verde beach, the Gorreana tea plantations, Caldeira Velha and access to Lagoa do Fogo.
