Is it easy to find public or private schools and childcare for children on the islands?

Public schools and pre-school exist on all the main islands and are free, but private schools and daycare places are limited and can have waiting lists, especially outside the bigger towns. Availability varies a lot by island and parish. Contact the local school group (agrupamento de escolas) and câmara early to secure a place.
