Short answer
You can visit the Capelinhos Volcano on Faial by going to the western tip of the island, where there is a visitor centre and museum. The volcano erupted from 1957 to 1958, adding new land to the island and causing many locals to emigrate. The area is now a protected landscape, and you can walk around the volcanic crater and lighthouse. Check opening hours for the museum.
