Buying a home

How can I find out if a property has liens, mortgages, or associated debts?

Short answer

You can request a certidão permanente from the Land Registry (Conservatória do Registo Predial) to check for liens and mortgages. Also ask the seller for recent property tax (IMI) and condominium statements. A lawyer can conduct a full due diligence, including checking court records. Always verify before signing any contract.
